Today I went with a friend to Manchester to visit the Christmas Market in Albert Square. It had a similar feel to the one in Liverpool which I have already visited, but was much larger with many more stalls and things on offer to buy. There was also a small pop-up market inside the Town Hall – which is on Albert Square – run by the store Afflecks. Ironically I was hoping to visit Afflecks while in Manchester today but didn’t get to it as we were in a different part of the city centre and didn’t have time to make the diversion. I’ve only been to Afflecks once before, back in 2007, when I took some photos of the tiled wall mosaics outside the building. I was hoping to photograph these again – assuming they are still there – but that will have to wait for another visit.

While in Manchester we also visited the Manchester Art Gallery which is presently hosting a couple of interesting exhibits. One is a exhibition of modern Japanese design, which includes furniture, ornaments and costumes. The other exhibition I enjoyed was a collection of photographs taken in the UK since the 1930s by various foreign photographers. Both exhibitions are worth a visit. Entrance to the Art Gallery is free and you can find it on Mosley Street (off Princess Street) and close to St Peter’s Square and just a short walk from Albert Square.
